Composite bonding

In most of our cases Composite Bonding is the process we use to deliver same day smile makeovers.

Also known as tooth bonding or dental bonding, Composite Bonding is one of the best ways to enhance your smile. It can fill chips, fractures or gaps between teeth, it can even fix discoloration.

A trained dentist will attach composite resin to the tooth, shaping it to restore its original appearance. It’s colour-matched to look totally natural, leaving you with a smile you love.

Frequently asked questions

What is composite bonding?

Composite Bonding, also known as tooth bonding or dental bonding, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure. It’s performed by dentists who have received special training to restore teeth, and can change their shape, size, length and colour, as well as closing unwanted gaps.

Composite bonding is a popular alternative to traditional ceramic veneers, however, as it’s non-invasive, your natural teeth are not damaged, drilled or shaved in any way.

After you’ve decided on how your new smile will look, our specially trained dentist will attach a colour-matched, composite resin to your tooth and shape it.

It’s specifically designed to look totally natural, providing a full smile makeover that’ll leave yours brighter and more harmonious.

Composite is made of an aesthetic-giving, high lustre resin, that includes strengthening properties like quartz or silica particles. It’s non-toxic and causes no known adverse reactions.

Composite Bonding is perfectly safe during your pregnancy. You’ll need to be lying down for the length of the procedure, so we encourage you to think about whether that’s something you’ll be comfortable with before booking in.

  1. Composite bonding is completely non-invasive, meaning your natural teeth will not be harmed during treatment.
  2. The resin is strong and will be cured onto your natural teeth (similar to Shellac) meaning you won’t have sensitivities or issues with eating or drinking.
  3. You can select a resin whiter than your natural teeth to help you achieve your perfect smile. This can be further complemented by having the surrounding teeth whitened to give your smile as natural a look as possible.
  4. Composite bonding isn’t a cosmetic-only solution: it can be great for anyone whose tooth structure has been damaged or weakened without causing further damage to the teeth.

Composite bonding is right for almost anyone, and there are only a few requirements. You must:

  • Be over the age of 18
  • Have good overall teeth & oral health
  • Not have existing ceramic or porcelain restorations, e.g. crowns, veneers, implants, bridges or dentures

Simply put – yes!

Composite bonding is a great alternative to traditional ceramic veneers, which are an invasive treatment and are non-reversible.

Composite bonding does not drill at or remove any of your natural teeth, but can improve the appearance of your smile to create a fuller, brighter look.

The treatment

  • Small misalignments, or mildly crooked teeth
  • Gaps
  • Uneven teeth, providing a more level smile
  • Tooth colour, making them all the same shade and brighter
  • Worn edges
  • Old restorations in need of replacement
  • Create wider smiles

Yes! Composite bonding is a great way to lengthen teeth. Our dentists know exactly how much to add, so your teeth stay healthier for longer.

It’s an excellent solution for receding gums. Recessions appear on the front surface of the tooth, and our treatment will cover these, as well as help with any sensitivity you’re facing.

No, but the old crown can be removed and replaced with a new one to match your new smile

At Smiles and Smiles, everyone follows the same 3-step process to achieving their perfect smile…

  1. Speak to an advisor
You’ll probably have a good idea of the kind of treatment you’re looking for, and what you want you’d love your smile to look like.
The first step is to talk to one of our advisors who will answer any immediate questions you have to help you make a well-informed decision.
  2. Attend a consultation
You’ll be paired with the best dentist for your preferred treatment and visit them in the clinic for a consultation. They’ll talk you through the options in thorough detail and discuss what to expect before the appointment and while you are in the chair.
  3. The smile transformation begins!
We can scan your teeth in person at one of our smile clinics, using state of art technology to show you a model of what your mouth will look like after treatment.
You’ll be able to choose from a number of different options to suit your style and budget.
Once you’ve selected the right plan, we can get to work creating your brand new smile. In some cases, it takes less than a day!

Types of treatment

Digital composite bonding is the most modern method for creating your perfect smile.

A digital scan is taken of your teeth and 3D printing technology is used to map out the resin on a computer. You are able to see what your smile will look like before any resin is applied to your teeth.

This is the traditional composite bonding method, during which a skilled dentist will apply resin directly to your teeth to fill chips, gaps, smooth edges & ridges and to improve the colour of your teeth.

The dentist will show their work as they go and you can look in the mirror every step of the way.

Aftercare

Composite bonding lasts for roughly 5-years, though there are some aftercare considerations which affect its lifespan.

You will need to avoid tea, coffee, smoking and foods which may cause discolouration within the first 48-hours after treatment and consider cutting back in the longer-term to keep your smile brighter for longer.

You will need to brush your teeth regularly with a good tooth brush and visit the hygienist as part of your dental routine, as healthy teeth & gums will ensure your composite bonding lasts as long as possible.

Finally, avoiding biting your nails will ensure your composite bonding doesn’t chip and stays strong.

Composite Bonding is almost always reversible, but we don’t think it should be necessary.

Should you wish to reverse it, composite would be taken off to return teeth to their natural shape. They may look duller and feel rougher for a few days but the roughness will smooth out over time.

At Smiles and Smiles, your case is assessed properly. Our dentists are highly trained and deliver excellent results, leaving you with a smile you’ll want to show off.

It’s no surprise that we want you to leave us smiling. So if you’re not happy with the results, we’ll work together to understand what’s gone wrong.

We’ll suggest solutions to get your smile where we both want it to be, guaranteeing your satisfaction – even repeating the treatment until you’re happy.  This will of course depend on the treatment option you selected at the beginning.

When properly cared for, Composite Bonding shouldn’t fall off. But as with most procedures, damage can happen.

When a patient has a very difficult bite, or their bite isn’t checked after bonding is placed, it could fall off in time. We’d always check in on bite capacity during pre-screening.

We’d also advise a pre-treatment visit to the hygienist. This is because if blood or saliva (common side effects of poor gum health) are present while the material is placed, it may not adhere, or stick – causing a de-bond later on.

Composite isn’t as strong as a natural tooth, so it can chip and break. Luckily, repairs are always effective. They cost less than veneer repairs and are done quickly.

During consultation we’ll discuss habits that could cause damage, like biting nails and teeth grinding to spot and prevent them early.

If this does happen, we’re on call to answer any questions. You can call us on 020 3814 7771 between 8am-8pm Monday-Friday or 10am-2pm Saturdays and Sundays.

Cost

At Smiles and Smiles, composite bonding starts from £1,150, though there are a number of different treatment options to explore before a definite cost can be shared with you.

Treatment costs differ depending on whether your opt for freehand or digital composite bonding, and the number of teeth being worked on.
